Looking at the Food Safety Training in Winnipeg course
Certified Food Handler Training is stipulated under the Food Service By-law of Winnipeg. According to the by-law:
- The person in charge of a food establishment cannot operate the business unless he/she has received Certified Food Handler Training.
- In an establishment with four staff members or less, at least one has to have received Certified Food Handler Training.
- In an establishment with five or more staff members, at least one has to have received Certified Food Handler Training and he/she has to be present at all times in the establishment.
The by-law doesn’t just focus on food safety training. It covers everything that an owner needs to know about managing a food establishment – restaurants, delis, convenience stores where food is prepared, and other similar facilities.
Certified Food Handler Training focuses on one major concept – safe food handling. Food handling starts from acquisition of raw products (meat, produce, etc.) to the packaging and/or service of the food. The following concepts are included in our training course:
- Basic microbiology
- Introduction to foodborne illness
- Personal health and hygiene
- Cleanliness and sanitation
- Food service and storage
- Food packaging
Note: Food safety training is an eight-hour course completed over one day. Classes start at 9:30 AM and finish at 4:30 PM. The certification exam is often scheduled for another day. Certificates are awarded once the student passes the exam.
Getting started: How to handle dehydration
Foodborne illness becomes dangerous when the victims get severely dehydrated. At this point, medical management in a hospital is typically needed. However, this can be avoided by keeping the victim well-hydrated at home. Diarrhea and vomiting causes loss of both electrolyte and fluids, so repleneshing them is a must. Electrolyte-rich fluids like Gatorade and oral rehydration solution are common home remedies to dehydration.
